For a decade, the conversation about remote work has been about access — could we get talented people working from anywhere? We solved that. The pandemic accelerated what was already inevitable, and by 2022 the question of whether distributed work could work had been answered definitively: it could.
But a quieter problem had been growing in the background. One that hiring more people, buying better tools, and running more video calls couldn't fix.

The history of distributed work can be mapped across four eras.
Era 1: Constrained by Geography. The only question was physical: can this person get to the office? The office was where work happened, because the office was where everything a person needed to work existed — the whiteboards, the institutional knowledge, the hallway conversations that moved decisions forward.
Era 2: Geography Unlocked. Broadband, SaaS, and collaborative tooling changed the question. Now it was: can this person contribute from where they are? The answer, increasingly, was yes. Remote work became real work.
Era 3: Constrained by Context. This is where most organizations live right now, even if they haven't named it. Talent is distributed. Tools are distributed. But institutional memory — the organizational brain — remains fragmented. A senior developer on your team in Warsaw doesn't have access to the informal reasoning that happened in a San Francisco conference room three years ago. A new hire in Austin doesn't know which decisions were made, which were reversed, and why. Work happens, but understanding doesn't travel with it.
Era 4: Context Unlocked. This is where we're headed. And it changes everything.
The Context Gap Is Costing You More Than You Think
Here's what a surprising amount of work actually runs into: not the wrong people, but people without the right context at the right moment.
The remote worker at the center of a complex organization is often orbiting — circling a core they can't quite reach. They lack the right information when a decision needs to be made. The right history when a problem resurfaces. The right institutional memory when a client relationship has a decade of nuance behind it. The right workflow context when a hand-off happens across time zones.
This isn't a talent problem. These are often exceptional people. It's an access-to-context problem.
AI Is Bifurcating — And Most People Are Watching the Wrong Half
The public conversation about AI and work is dominated by displacement: which jobs will AI take? That's the wrong question for knowledge work.
There are two fundamentally different ways AI integrates into a workforce. Automating AI substitutes for human labor by performing existing tasks — it has historically driven wages down and employment sideways in the roles it targets. Augmenting AI is different. It complements what workers produce. It improves the quality, capability, and variety of what a person can do — and it creates entirely new categories of work where human judgment has a decisive advantage.
The data on augmentation is striking. Since 2015, 24% of entirely new job titles have been created in Computer and Mathematical occupations — the exact roles where augmenting AI is most active. 41% of new work within Data Science specifically came from AI-adjacent capability expansion, not displacement.
The firms winning the next decade of knowledge work aren't replacing their people with AI. They're multiplying what each person is capable of.
Operational Intelligence: The Bridge AI Was Always Supposed to Be
What closes the context gap isn't more AI in the abstract — it's a specific application of augmenting AI that we call Operational Intelligence.
The idea is direct: inject real-time institutional memory and workflow context directly into the remote worker's environment. Not as a separate research task they have to perform. Not as a dashboard they have to consult. As ambient, available intelligence that surfaces at the moment of need — in the flow of the actual work.
When this works, the remote worker stops being isolated by geography or fragmented by organizational distance. They become something else: a hyper-enabled node of the organization's central intelligence. Decision support, institutional history, workflow context, and organizational memory flow to them continuously. The wall between "being there" and "being effective there" disappears.

Remote work changed where people could work. Operational Intelligence changes what they are capable of doing once they are there.

This is the actual next phase of the future of work. Not AI replacing people. Not automation eliminating roles. The expansion of who can operate effectively inside a complex organization — regardless of where they sit, when they work, or how long they've been at the company.
